When will Rogers update Android phones to version 1.6 of the Operating System? Android users in the United States (and other countries) have had ver 1.6 since at least the beginning of October, and some of the newer Android phones coming out are already on ver 2.0! There are new apps coming out in the Market Place that we can't use because they require ver 1.6 or above, and we are stuck on 1.5.
Please don't tell me i can get it now from here: https://your.rogers.com/web_auth/downlo … t=Wireless because this is NOT Android 1.6, it is a bug fix/security patch. Your CSRs have been telling me (and other people) that this is 1.6, and that is not true.

I too would like an answer to these questions.
Also why is it that Rogers is marketing their Android phones as the latest and greatest and they are not even informing new potential customers that their OS is out of date. I could go out today and purchase a Rogers branded phone with Android on it and it would be running the OLD OUTDATED version of Android. As a matter of fact your potential customers are not even informed that they will not have access to paid applications in the Android market.
The new version of Android was available and released to other countries around the world before I purchased my HTC Dream. When I purchased it from one of YOUR authorized dealers I specifically asked if the phone was going to be crippled in any way on the Rogers network and I was told no it wasn't.
Well I consider not being able to download and use Google Maps Navigation because my OS is running at 1.5 when the phone manufacture has had a 1.6 update available since October 1st as a limitation of the phone. And since I don't have access to paid applications in the Android Market I can't download applications that I want to install on my phone is also a limitation. You put both of these together and Rogers has crippled my phone. It may not be intentional but the fact is the phone does not do what it was advertised to do.

Can Rogers Phone support notify the user community what its plans are for software updates of the Android phone line?
Are you going to update to 1.6, or 2.0? What are your timeframes to do so?

I am also wondering when Rogers will make the 1.6 update available. I purchased my phone a couple of months ago, with the understanding that it would be supported throughout the lifetime of my contract, which is three years. 1.5 is outdated now, let alone in a year or two's time! There are many apps I would like to use with my phone which are currently unusable due to the OS, which makes me a very dissatisfied customer.
Can you please provide a date for when the 1.6 update will be released?

The fact that the HTC Dream/Magic and the LG Eve are already as good as paper weights is really quite disturbing. The hardware is more than capable of running 1.6 and all reports point to the fact that 2.0 should run perfectly fine on those hardware platforms as well.
I have been on the phone with countless members of technical support, in contact with support via email and twitter as well as a member of the Office of the President (I don't have his name handy I wrote it down at home and I can't remember it right now) and the information I was getting was either non-committal or just plain contradictory. The guy from the Office of the President was very non-committal about the update. He said that he went to the HTC website and there was an area where you could enter your serial number of your phone to get any available updates. I had to inform HIM that this only pointed you to the security update that was released in August. I got my HTC Dream in July and for the most part I love the phone, but the main reason I got this phone was so that I would/could be kept up to the latest greatest software for my hardware platform. Rogers assured me that the platform would be kept up to date, mind you I was also promised the same thing with my Palm Treo 750. *sigh* you would think I would know better by now.

Add me to the list of upset Rogers customers, regarding your slow update process. Holding back updates to Android handsets affects more than just Rogers customers, as it hinders the platform itself. What motivation to developers have if carriers are keeping phones on outdated software making it more difficult for the developer to support a wide range of phones, not too mention that if they want their applications running on Roger's phones it has to be a free app as we do not have access to paid apps.
Roger's is really letting the ball drop on this one. The HTC Magic could be just as good as the HTC Hero to people not worried about the camera quality (Hero's is better), IF and only IF Roger's updates the firmware on the Magic. Many other carriers have already pushed the update to the HTC Magic via over the air updates, a much simpler way for end users to update their phones. As it stand however the other carriers have the best by far Android handset in Canada, with another one (Motorola Milestone) coming that will be even better.
If Rogers continues to not support my handset (and other Android handsets for that matter), I will be forced to pursue other carriers in search of better customer service.

I am also disgusted with the Android State. Hell, I've only had my Eve since Nov 20th! I wish I knew that Rogers wouldn't be caring for it's customers and the technology that they sell. I realize it's business, but, without customers, how do you make money? I will keep my eye out and my ears open for anything that MAY happen in the near future. I hope this issue is resolved soon.

You can add me as well.
This is completely unacceptable! I purchased the phone from Rogers and I should be getting any and all updates as they are release from the maker of the phone. When I had my BlackBerry I didn't have to wait for Rogers to "approve" the updates from RIM I simple used their software and updated my phone. No muss no fuss! Rogers needs to pull it's head out of you know where and start treating it's customers with the respect they deserve. I could have gone with Bell or Telus or even Virgin, but I chose Rogers and now I'm being treated like a second class citizen! But why? Was it because I, like so many other decided to fight the Apple craze and not purchase an IPhone?
If you're going to sell something...SUPPORT IT! Don't just brush us off because your sales were poor or because a newer model is being released, most of us can't afford to get a new phone every three months so we're stuck with the ones we have for a year or more.
So my advice to you Rogers...grow up and act like the big boys in the States, get the Android updates out when they do and keep your customers happy!

Rogers,
I hope, now that this issue has been brought to you attention, that you will recognize the disservice this is to your customers.
An Android 1.6 update should be made available to all phones capable of receiving it for the following reasons:
- http://developer.android.com/sdk/androi … ights.html
- Namely, for the new market, text-to-speech engine (for some this is almost a necessity to make good use of their phones), and the new accessibility framework.
- Recent apps, such as Google Maps and Google Googles are available ONLY on 1.6 and up. It is quite clear that 1.5 is being phased out. Google is targeting all their new apps for 1.6 and up.
- developers need to test applications on Android 1.6. Rogers users who write applications simply can't do this.
- it is EXTREMELY dissatisfying seeing feature after feature and application after application released without being able to use them on our phones. Especially considering the fact that our phones support them, but our provider (that's you Rogers) is the only thing holding us back.
Many other providers have already released the 1.6 update a long time ago. Your users are frustrated. Your CEO, Nadir Mohamed, was quoted as saying that you should "Never be satisfied with the status quo. Always think of the customer." I hope you start thinking of us soon.

Same situation here, pay hard earned cash for a new phone and see it quickly go obsolete as Rogers refuses to support the phone. Not having access to paid Apps in the Market is bad enough, but to see more Apps transition/get released to 1.6 and thus become unavailable to me is ridiculous.
Luckily I am on a month to month contract, so I'll either root the phone at the end of December or jump to Telus when the Milestone appears early 2010.

We should be benefiting from the rapid pace of Android development. Right now, as Rogers customers, it is quite the opposite.
I will definitely be keeping my eye on Telus and Bell to see how they handle updates in the coming months. The 2.0 update for the Hero shouldn't be too far off. It will be interesting to see how quickly it gets rolled out.

Add me to the list as well. It is quite disappointing to see improvements to your phone being released by other carriers and you're left out in the cold.
Offline
How hard can it be to release this free update? Charge us a little for it if you must. What's the problem. You don't have to package anything up or mail anything. I don't want your silly "free gifts". Just give me the updates like the other carriers. Brian

And why is it that iPhone users get automatic updates Over The Air as soon as it's available, with absolutely no delay or filtering on Rogers's part? But when it comes to Android devices, we get nothing at all.

There does not seem to be any valid reason why 1.6 is not approved for release. Three months is an eternity in technology. If this is the way Rogers supports advanced service like 3G I am very concerned. As a consumer we can vote with our wallets. Rogers reports 8 million subs on Fido and Rogers networks. A loss of 10% in their subscriber base might equate to as much as $48mm per month in lost revenue. That would get their attention.
You would think that a company like this is aware of the ability for a grass roots movement to swell via social networks. Negative billing is still very much in the minds of consumers. Another blunder like that only this time related to the most profitable part of their business, wireless, could do some serious damage to the Rogers corporate image.
For now, I will be patient but I watch this forum daily. http://tinyurl.com/rgrs-android
Rogers is very much aware if this issue and cannot hide from it for much longer.
This story has legs. Let's hope the end result is corporate goodwill and it becomes a good news story for Rogers.

Also quote disapointed in Rogers support in terms of software updates and not just for this phone.
Had a windows mobile 5 device previously and even though the HTC S610 got the windows 6 update, my HTC TyTn did not...
So now BB and iPhone devices get updates to keep these devices up to date and improve the capabilities of the devices but Android phones do not? Why are there two standards of support here?
I can update the software / firmware on my PC, I can get firmware updates for my DVD player to support new data formats, I can even get updates from my car dealer to the engine control module firmware! So why can't I get an update for my "smart" phone? Very furtrating to say the least, and I've only had the phone for three days!!!
If Rogers is not prepared to support the phones then they should at least not customize them to the point where we can't use the manufacturer supplied updates. If the manufacturer feels it's important enought to spend time and money on releasing an update to the phone's OS why should we not be able to benefit from that effort?
Come on Rogers, lead, follow, or get out of the way!!!

Yes! Come on Rogers! Time to get 1.6. You gotta compete with Telus.
If you can't, prepare to lose your Google Phone lovers! We WILL switch to Telus.
1.6 offers so much more. Many apps we cannot dowload because it requires 1.6. For example, have you tried Google Googles? Me either! An app built by Google allowing you to take a picture with your phone and it will recognize the object it has taken.
COME ON ROGERS! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!
When you decided to offer something like the Google Phone, KNOWING that Google evolves quickly, shouldn't you have been ready to do the same?

I just purchased an HTC Dream on Monday. What a shock to come home, do a little searching for info about my phone and find out that it is still running on an old version of the Android OS (1.5). Why are we not able to update? Looks like no one has been able to get a straight answer. I will say that there is a lot of negative "Rogers / HTC" info popping up on the web because of this.
Monday I bought a phone.
Today I've joined an ever growing number of people looking for the same answers!!
So, let's have some answers!

I am thinking the reason why there is no update for the HTC current Android 1.5 is because the manufacturers want people to purchase newer devices. Although it is strange from what I am reading on here that the update is in most countries except Canada. Anyways, this is just my two cents.

If you go to the last page in the link above, ( http://tinyurl.com/rgrs-android ) It looks like Rogers has pushed HTC for updates and they are on the way. w00t!
